Transport for Greater Manchester react to Croydon tram crash report
TFGM say they welcome any moves to improve safety
As part of the wider tram community we have been closely monitoring the progress of this investigation and will, alongside UKTram and other industry partners, take time to consider the full report and recommendations in detail.
It is absolutely vital that lessons are learnt when such tragic incidents do occur, so as to ensure all practicable steps can be taken to avoid any repeat. As such, we welcome the report and its findings.
The Metrolink network is compliant with all necessary health and safety legislation. Safety is inherent in everything we do, backed up by constant reviews and rigorous assurance processes to ensure our safety measures remain robust and effective.
Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM) Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “The tragic events of 9 November 2016 caused loss of life and serious injury and our thoughts are with all those who have suffered and continue to suffer.
“The safety systems in place across the light rail industry make tragic events such as Croydon incredibly rare, but it is important to remain vigilant and learn from them when they do, to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
“We welcome any proposal that would further improve standards across the industry and we will be looking closely at these recommendations.
“Should enhancements or alterations to our trams or infrastructure be required then this is something we will look closely at in partnership with the Metrolink operator and wider industry colleagues, as there is no higher priority than the safety of wellbeing of our customers and staff.”
Metrolink’s infrastructure and trams are owned by TfGM, with KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) contracted to act as operator and maintainer of the network. The operator is accountable for the safe running of the network.
Aline Frantzen, Managing Director at KAM, said: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the incident in Croydon as this will, no doubt, be another difficult time for them.
“The safety of Metrolink’s customers is the number one priority of every employee at KAM so we welcome the RAIB report. We have worked collaboratively with the RAIB and have ensured we have continued to contribute to, and learn from, the experience from our industry colleagues.
“The Metrolink network has historically performed to a high standard of safety, with measures in place to reduce safety risks. We will continue working with our sister companies, KeolisAmey Docklands and Nottingham Trams, as well as other UK operators, to share best practice and ensure safety is consistently improved upon."
