A man has been seriously injured after he was attacked with an axe in Stockport.

Police were called to Newlstrop Walk, Heaton Chapel in the early hours of the morning to reports of an assault.

A 39-year-old man was found with serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where staff say he is now in a stable but serious condition.

Police have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of Grievous Bodily Harm.

Sergeant David Chambers of GMP’s Stockport borough said this was an ‘isolated incident’.

“Our investigation is in the early stages and we are still trying to ascertain the circumstances behind this attack,” he said.

“We do not believe there was any threat to the wider public and this was an isolated incident.

“We currently have one man in custody who is helping us with our enquiries but I would still appeal to the public for any information.”

Those with information are being urged to call GMP on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
