Stockport Man Jailed For Murdering His Wife
A Stockport man who attacked and killed his wife, leaving her wrapped up in a duvet, has been jailed.
37-year-old Abul Kashem Miah (pictured) of Florist Street in Shaw Heath, was found guilty following a trial.
Today he’s been sentenced to life to serve a minimum of 15 years at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.
Abul attacked the 35-year-old teacher and mother of 2, Rukshana Miah at her home in the North Reddish area of Stockport, leaving her with serious and severe injuries.
A doctor later concluded her injuries were consistent with being strangled.
Just before 2am of Monday 18th August last year, Abdul called the emergency services to say he had given the woman ‘a slap’ at the home on Longford Road West and she was dead.
Officers attended and found the victim wrapped up in a duvet, and the responding officer described the scene as being similar to how an undertaker would wrap a body.
She was rushed to hospital and remained in a coma until she died on the 23rd of August last year.
Abul was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and told officers the two had had consensual sex that evening, but they got into an argument which turned physical.
He told police he had put his forearm over her mouth as they were wrestling on the floor in order to prevent an argument.
Abul further told police he left the bedroom and when he returned saw she was not moving and, thinking she was dead, called 999.
However, a post-mortem examination later revealed the true extent of her injuries including ligature marks around her neck consistent with being strangled.
Police also found diary-style notes in Rukshana’s home, that revealed their relationship had been strained for some time, that she believed he’d run up credit card bills in her, and that she’s been physically abused by Abul.
Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington the Senior Investigating Officer said:
"It is clear from everyone we have spoken to, the victim was a popular member of society and was much loved. It is clear that she touched the lives of everyone she met and her death has devastated everyone who knew her. Our thoughts are particularly with her family.
"Tragically, in cases like this, only two people really know what happened on that fateful day but it is clear from the severe injuries she sustained that Abul’s claim he merely tried to stop her from shouting was nothing more than a pack of lies to cover up his guilt.
“The fact he maintained the lie throughout the trial, rather than admit what he did, has merely compounded the grief and upset the victim’s family have had to endure.
"Despite bravely fighting while in a coma, her injuries were too severe and sadly she succumbed a few days later.
"Abul has now been convicted of his terrible crime thanks to the work of the investigating officers, CPS and the prosecution team who exposed the holes in his story. Nevertheless, there are no winners today. The family have been left with an irreplaceable and devastating hole in their lives.
"I can only hope that people take heed of this tragic incident, and if they too are suffering abuse that they come forward and report it so we can protect them before it escalates."
