Stockport Council says it is working hard to respond to the impacts of significant and heavy rainfall, which has caused flooding across Greater Manchester.

Stockport Council statement in full:

Council teams are working closely with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and Greater Manchester Police to assist residents, particularly those who are vulnerable and in need of urgent support.

Evacuation is now underway at Meadow Mill with the water level having dropped to a sufficient level to allow residents to walk out. Vulnerable residents and those with mobility issues were prioritised and have been assisted to exit the building.

Crews remain on-site at flooded roads, and while some floodwaters are beginning to recede, the situation depends on any further rainfall. A full sweep of affected roads will be carried out later today and tomorrow morning.

It has been confirmed that the A34 is now clear of floodwater; however, vehicles are awaiting removal before the road can be fully reopened to traffic. The A555 will remain closed this evening and likely tomorrow.

With temperatures expected to drop tonight, priority routes will be gritted this evening from 7pm. Roads may still be hazardous, and everyone is urged to take extra care and only travel if necessary.

Leader of Stockport Council Cllr Mark Hunter, said: "Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during this challenging time. Teams are working around the clock alongside emergency services to assist those affected and to clear roads as quickly as possible. Please take care on the roads, avoid flooded areas, and travel cautiously. Thank you for your cooperation as we manage this ongoing situation."
