Pep Guardiola refused to comment on referee Bobby Madley who sent off Kyle Walker for two bookable offences – the second of which left the fans inside the Eithad fuming as it seemed to be for a fairly innocuous ‘shove’ that consisted of the defender simply stepping towards Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first half.

Rooney had given the visitors the lead just after the half hour mark before Walker saw red seven minutes later.

The Blues piled on the pressure despite being a man down with Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and Danilo all having chances before substitute Raheem Sterling levelled with less than ten minutes left to play.

There was still time for more controversy as former United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin saw red for a second yellow after a challenge on Aguero which again seemed fairly tame and made sure both managers had little love for Madley at the final whistle.

Speaking after the Everton match Guardiola noted:

“Yeah, we are here for the results, in my case to win games,'' City head coach Guardiola said. We didn't win.

“We made absolutely everything to win with 11 (players), with 10 against 11 against Everton, a Europa league team, with quality players.

“I prefer to win the game but there's nothing to say.

“It was quite similar to a lot of games last season. Sad because we want to start good at home but I don't have regrets.

“We created chances again, a lot. They had one on the target, they scored.

“We were on the table and nothing. It's just the second game but improving.''

The draw leaves City two points off the early pace setters which include United who sit top of the table on goal difference after winning their opening two games 4-0.
