An inquest into the death of British boxing icon Ricky Hatton is scheduled to open this morning at South Manchester Coroners' Court in Stockport, just over a month after the former world champion was found dead at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde.

Hatton, 46, was discovered early on Sunday 14th September by his long-time manager and friend Paul Speak, who had arrived to take him to the airport for a planned trip.

Several hours later, news of the star's death broke online and sent shockwaves across the nation. Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances and the case was referred to the coroner.

Hatton's family have not yet spoken publicly about the cause of his death but we're expecting some detail to be revealed at what we anticipate to be a very short administrative hearing to open and adjourn the coronial process.

The inquest will be led by senior coroner Alison Mutch, and will confirm Hatton’s identity and, if available, the medical cause of death. A decision will then be made on whether a full inquest is required for a later date.

The hearing comes just days after Hatton’s funeral drew thousands of people onto the streets of Manchester to pay their respects. Mourners lined numerous sections of a 13 mile memorial route from Ricky's local pub in Gee Cross, to Manchester Cathedral where the funeral service was held.

Among the big names to attend the ceremony were Frank Bruno, Liam Gallagher, Tyson Fury and Wayne Rooney. The service included emotional eulogies from all three of Hatton's children.

It's hoped today's inquest hearing will begin to shed light on the circumstances of Hatton’s passing, which has left the sporting world and beyond in mourning.
