Manchester imams say muslims can get COVID19 jab without breaking fast
Health bosses say getting a vaccine will not invalidate fasting during Ramadan
As Ramadan approaches thousands of practising Muslims in Manchester are being reminded that they can get the Covid-19 jab without breaking their fast.
The month of Ramadan is marked by acts of devotion, including completely abstaining from eating or drinking between dawn and sunset.
Islamic scholars, working in partnership with the Muslim Council of Britain, have shared messages of reassurance to worshippers confirming that getting the Covid-19 vaccine during Ramadan is permitted.
Manchester City Council will continue to work with local communities to ensure that everyone has safe and quick access to their vaccine when offered an appointment.
Anyone who has concerns about receiving their jab during Ramadan is urged to speak with their GP or Imam so they can make an informed choice.
It is important to note that taking a covid test – either PCR or LFT – does not invalidate the fast.
David Regan, Manchester’s Director of Public Health, said:
“We are making positive strides throughout Manchester to make sure that the Covid-19 jab is rolled out safely and that residents can make an informed choice about their health.
“We have a large population of Muslim residents in Manchester and it’s important that the work we are doing supports them, particularly during Ramadan. The Muslim Council of Great Britain and the British Islamic Medical Association has produced a wealth of information to ensure that worshippers in Manchester can make the right decision over the vaccine.
“The vaccine will not invalidate the fast and I would urge anyone who is contacted about their first or second jab during Ramadan to keep their appointment.”
Ustadh Nasar Ishfaq, Imam at the British Muslim Heritage Centre, said:
“Please do not delay taking your Covid vaccine during the days of Ramadan if you’re invited to do so. Taking the vaccine does not break your fast and neither does getting a test for Covid-19. Though of course if you feel unwell then it is permitted to break your fast and to make it up another day.”
