Cheshire priest facing multiple sex offence charges linked to 'rave-style' church
The Rev Christopher Brain led an Evangelical movement called the Nine O'Clock Service between 1986 and 1995
A priest is facing dozens of sex offences charges following accusations from former members of a radical church congregation in Sheffield.
The Nine O'Clock Service was set up in the Crookes area of the city in 1986, and was seen as an experiment to attract young people to church, using a rave-style culture.
It later moved to Ponds Forge in the city centre.
Hundreds of people attended services, but it collapsed in 1995 following a number of accusations of sexual and mental abuse from women who had joined the movement.
South Yorkshire Police began an investigation in 2020, when a number of people came forward.
Christopher Brain, a 66-year-old from Wilmslow in Cheshire, with is now facing one count of rape and 33 counts of indecent assault.
Chief Superintendent Lindsey Butterfield, District Commander for Sheffield, said: “These charges follow a complex and wide-ranging investigation into events dating back 30 or more years.
“The police investigation was launched in 2020, when a number of victims came forward to report the allegations to us. Since this time, an investigation team has been working hard to build up a full picture of what is reported to have happened.
“We understand this is a concerning case and one which will have an impact upon individuals and communities. We will continue to provide appropriate support and updates to those involved.”
Brain is expected to appear in court on the 18th March.
