Police watchdog investigating over Wigan crash which saw death of pedestrian

Greater Manchester Police has referred itself to the police watchdog after a crash during a police pursuit, which resulted in the death of a pedestrian in Wigan.
Officers were pursuing a vehicle in the Platt Bridge area yesterday afternoon, when a car collided with another vehicle not involved in the pursuit. That vehicle then hit a woman in her 60s.
The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but died a short time later.
A man is currently being questioned in relation to the incident. The force has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is standard in any accident as a result of a police pursuit.
Superintendent Ian Jones of GMP’s Wigan district said; “Our sincere thoughts and condolences go to the family and friends of the woman that has sadly passed away following the incident earlier on today.
“We understand that the public are concerned by incidents of this nature and in-line with normal procedure, referrals have been made to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
“Investigations like this often result in road closures which can cause significant disruption and we thank the local community and road users for their patience during the road closure.”
