Police are trying to track down a man who stole a bus in Stalybridge.

On Saturday the 5th of December, a man had fallen asleep on a bus and when it returned to the bus depot on Clarence Street he got off, but managed to get onto another empty bus and drive it away.

He drove in the direction of Droylsden and turned onto Clegg Street, where he hit with a building. The man then jumped off the bus and fled on foot.

Police have now released a CCTV image of a man they are keen to speak to in connection with the theft.

Police Sergeant Ade Girtchen of Tameside division said:

“Stealing a bus is a dangerous and foolish thing to do.

Thankfully no-one was hurt when the bus crashed, but people could have been seriously injured.

“We have a clear CCTV image of a man we want to speak to and I am hoping that someone will recognise him and contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 9350, 101, or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
