Police officer in hospital following high speed Salford chase
17 year-old boy is arrested for vehicle taking
A man’s been arrested and a police officer was left with serious injuries after a police chase in Salford.
Shortly after 12:05 this morning, officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Policing Unit attempted to pull over a blue Fiat Punto on the A6, near Little Hulton. The car refused to stop for police and a chase began on the A6 which went through Swinton. Before heading towards Irlam, the police deployed a stinger on the car.
As both the Punto and police car left the roundabout at Manchester Road, Pendlebury, they were involved in a collision with the central reservation barrier which caused the car to stop. The occupants of the Punto then jumped out of the car and ran off.
One of the occupants of the Punto, a 17-year-old, was then arrested nearby on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking. He remains in custody for questioning over the incident.
The driver of the police car was taken to a hospital with serious, but not life threatening, injuries. He is still at the hospital for treatment.
Police Constable Neil Pennington from the Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) said:
“This incident could have been avoided had the driver of the Punto adhered to the laws of the road and pulled in when instructed to however they chose to ignore this and now as a result there is a police officer in the hospital. We will be carrying out a number of enquiries today to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the collision and I would like to appeal to anyone who has information or dash cam footage showing the incident to please contact the SCIU.”
