Police investigating the attempted rape of a young girl in Openshaw have made an arrest.
Shortly after 2pm on Saturday 10 February 2018, police were called to reports of an attempted rape off Kincraig Close.
A 10-year-old girl had been walking with friends before she became separated from them and was approached by a man.
He led her to an area of wasteland where he sexually assaulted her, before attempting to rape her.
The girl fled towards a dog walker who raised the alarm and a police investigation was launched.
A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and attempted rape and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Boyce, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “While we’ve made an arrest, our investigation into this horrendous attack continues.
“We are looking to speak to anyone who was around Kilcraig Close on Saturday afternoon, or who travelled on the Ashton metrolink line between 1.30 and 1.40pm that day, to help with our enquiries.
“Our increased patrols will continue over the coming days and I’d urge any local residents with concerns to please speak to them directly.
“If you have any information that could help with this investigation, no matter how small, please share this with police at the earliest possible opportunity.”
