Parents in Greater Manchester 'falling into debt' over kids' parties

Support group reveals many parents are struggling under the birthday party pressure

A new study says parents are getting into serious financial trouble - to pay for their kids’ birthday parties.

The average cost for a child at primary school's party is now £500, with party bags often costing in excess of five pounds per guest.

Some parents are even turning to illegal money lenders in a bid to give their child the ‘perfect party’ as social media and spiralling expectations often heap pressure on mums and dads.

It’s not just hosting parties which is proving to be costly as even attending birthday parties can see parents having to fork out money for presents.

Support Group Home Start are advising parents to look for alternative ways to give their children birthday parties – saying there are ways of throwing a great day without breaking the bank.
