Volunteers are canoeing down the Rochdale canal near Castlefield this week to help clear up the increasing amount of litter that’s often carelessly thrown into the water.

The Canal and River Trust want people to get involved in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean by removing litter from the water and the towpath, as well as painting lock gates and planting flowers.

John, a volunteer who has helped remove litter from the canal, said:

“You find things like sunglasses, passports, loads of empty wallets but of course, inevitably, we’re forever taking out bottles and cans.

“It’s quite surprising, whether its wind; rain or sunshine - people will come out and it’s great.”

It is estimated that the charity spends £1million every year to tackle the ongoing battle with litter, plastic and glass bottles which can cause devastation to wildlife and the environment.

Daniel Greenhalgh, regional director from the Canal and River Trust, who looks after the canal, said:

“This historic waterway played a vital role in helping make Manchester the great city it is today and is a fantastic resource. Yet, sadly, it has become an easy target for people to dump their litter.”

He added: “We need people to help us look after the canal. The Big Spring Clean events are a great way to make a difference while spending time outdoors and being by water.

“Just spending an hour or on the towpath is a great way to meet people while making a big difference within your local community – we hope you can join us.”

The campaign is part of the Canal and River Trust’s plan to transform the canal over the next few years to make it a cleaner and greener place within the city centre for people to enjoy.
