A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died in Bolton.

Police were called out to a disturbance at Elgin Street at 1.40am today (Sunday 10th September 2017), where they spoke to two men who'd been in an altercation.

A 49 year old was arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace, but whilst being taken into custody he had a medical episode which meant he had to be taken to hospital where he died.

Officers returned to the house and after further enquiries he was arrested on suspicion of murder.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission because of the death of the man whilst under their care.

Superintendent Andrea Jones of GMP's Bolton borough said, "I would first like to offer my most sincere condolences to the loved ones of the man who sadly died this morning. This was a tragic incident and we are working to provide them with support from specially trained officers at this difficult time.
