Murder charge after death of man in Bolton

A man will appear in court today (4 September 2021) charged with murder after a man died in Bolton.

Robert Owen Greenhalgh (27/7/1990), of no fixed abode, will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court charged in connection with the death of Robert Smethurst.

He is also charged with a section 47 assault.

Officers were called at about 1.30am on Thursday 2 September to reports a man was unconscious in a bar on Bradshawgate in Bolton town centre.

Mr Smethurst, 36, of Farnworth, was treated at the scene by police officers and NWAS paramedics but died later at hospital.

His wife Amanda said: "My husband and father to our two beautiful angels was the most loving, selfless and supportive man.

"Our family and friends have been utterly destroyed by his loss."
