Police have been granted additional stop and search powers in several parts of Manchester after a fatal shooting in Moss Side.

The Section 60 order means officers in Moss Side and Whalley Range will be able to stop and search people without the need for reasonable suspicion.

The order applies between 4am today and 4am tomorrow (August 17).

Greater Manchester Police has stepped up patrols in Moss Side after a 20 year old man was fatally injured in Claremont Road in the early hours of Monday (August 15).

Four men were also arrested after a fight involving knives in Roseberry Street.

Detective Superintendent David Meeney from Greater Manchester Police said: “We continue to investigate two incidents from the early hours of the 15 of August whereby a number of males have suffered injuries and sadly a young man has lost his life."

"These investigations are being progressed by the GMP Major Incident Team. At present we do not believe these incidents are linked but we remain open minded as we continue to follow lines of enquiry.

"Four men remain in custody in relation to the assault on Roseberry Street and we continue to support the family of the young man who has passed away.

"We will have more officers in the area in the coming days and as part of this powers under Section 60 of Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 have been authorised to support the response to protecting the local community.

"This is not something that is considered lightly and will be kept under review."
