Transport authorities are warning of an extremely busy week on the road network

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) are urging all motorists to plan ahead and make alternative travel arrangements as the latest phase of the Regent Road/Mancunian improvements works begin.

Additional traffic management will be deployed overnight on Sunday 7 October and will reduce the whole of Chester Rd/Mancunian Way roundabout to one lane. The roundabout is currently three lanes throughout.

Significant delays are expected as all approaches to the Chester Road roundabout will be reduced to one lane. (Map attached).

This will cause extended journey times, with 45 minutes predicted between the M602 roundabout and Chester Road and long commutes from Chester Road to and from the city centre, particularly in the evening peak.

TfGM are advising motorists to:

• Avoid the area and use an alternative route if possible – particularly at peak times

• Use the M60 and access the city centre via different routes (map attached)

• Use public transport and take advantage of the region’s multiple park and ride sites

Park and Ride

• Allow extra time and plan ahead

• Review their normal journey and consider how they can make changes

TfGM’s travel advice page has so far been visited by 65,000 users and provides detailed travel information and alternatives for customers. It can be visited at https://tfgm.com/travel-updates/regent-road.

TfGM has also worked with First Manchester to provide additional morning and evening peak park and ride bus services from the A580 site offering circa 100 extra seats per bus. These will run direct between the A580 and Salford Crescent and then call at all stops to Princess Street.

Average Journey Times

Metrolink are running as many trams as possible throughout the works and park and ride facilities are available across the network. Ladywell offers a great option from the west of the city whereas Sale Water Park provides good connections from the south.

TfGM have also worked with Manchester City Football Club to provide an additional park and ride tram option at the Etihad Campus.

All of Greater Manchester’s park and ride facilities are free to use and thousands of spaces are available across the region.

The lane closures on Chester Road roundabout, which form a key part of the joint Manchester and Salford City Council improvement scheme, will be in place until summer 2019.
