Manchester City have won the 4th consecutive Carabao Cup after beating Tottenham 1-0 in the final.

After a goalless first half, City finally took the lead in the 82nd minute as Aymeric Laporte headed home De Bruyne’s free-kick.

They’re now unbeaten in 19 games in the competition – their last defeat was in 2016 against Manchester United.

Match-winner Laporte was delighted to have made the decisive contribution to a fourth successive League Cup win.

He told Sky Sports: “We are so happy to win this title again. We lost in the FA Cup, so it is something good for us to get confidence and to keep going like we have done in the last few months.

“We have been so, so good and we have to keep this rhythm, this way, to win more titles.”

Laporte added: “It was difficult because they (Tottenham) are a good team. It’s never easy to play against a team like that. Today, we were superb.

“We did very well, so we are very happy to win today and to win this trophy as well.”

Not only was it a big day for the teams playing but for everyone hoping to see crowds returning to outdoor events.

8000 people were allowed into Wembley Stadium to watch the game – the first time fans have been allocated tickets to see their own clubs play since lockdown started in March 2020.

Both teams were allocated 2000 seats for supporters at Wembley, the other 4000 were made up of local residents and key workers.

Fans were required to provide proof of a negative test before entering Wembley, and they must take another test within 5 days after the match.

It’s part of the UK Government’s Events Research Programme (ERP) to monitor the transmission of Covid-19 to start allowing spectators at outdoor events.

It’s been a busy week in football with the fallout of the Super League and the departure of José Mourinho on Monday.

This victory keeps Pep Guardiola’s hopes of a treble alive – his side are in the semi-finals of the Champions League and likely winners of the Premier League this season.
