Drivers are being warned of long delays on the M6 in Cheshire this morning after a serious crash.

Highways England say the collision northbound involves a number of lorries.

Three out of four lanes have been shut between Middlewich and Knutsford since around 4am, with traffic now backing up for miles.

INRIX, the travel data provider, said in an update: "Severe delays and three lanes closed due to accident, five lorries involved on M6 Northbound from J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel) to J19 A556 (Knutsford). Travel time is around 1 hour and 40 minutes."

There are currently at least 6km of traffic backing up down the M6, and motorway bosses believe queues will only get worse as the morning rush begins.

North West Motorway Police posted on social media X, a short time ago: "Just to update motorists, there is still a lane 1, 2 and 3 closure J18 to 19 M6 Northbound due to a collision. There is one lane open past the scene but there are approximately 6km of tailbacks at this time, which are likely to increase as we approach rush hour."

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the crash.
