A man has been charged more than two years on from the death of a Stockport footballer during a car meet in Warrington.

It is believed Sam Harding was hit by a car in April 2022.

The 20-year-old was a semi-professional footballer who played for Ashton Athletic, based in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Following his death, the club said: "There are no words to describe the loss we are all feeling on the sad passing of Sam Harding only 20 years old and a current first team player at Ashton Athletic.

"He was a quiet, well mannered young man and he will be sorely missed by his team mates, managers and everyone involved at the club."

Cheshire Police have now charged a 23-year-old man from Leeds with causing death by dangerous driving.

Mason Hodgson is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates Court on 15 October.
