Detectives are continuing to appeal for information following a stabbing in St Helens in the early hours of Sunday (5 March).

At around 1.15am, emergency services were called to Ormskirk Street after a report that a 20-year-old man had been stabbed.

Enquiries have established that the incident took place in an alleyway off Ormskirk Road, near to Natwest Bank.

Officers attended and an ambulance took the victim to hospital for treatment where he remains in a stable condition.

Two men, both aged 19 years and from St Helens, were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 Wounding with intent and Affray and have been conditionally bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden said: “Our investigation continues and we are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or may have been passing on foot or in a vehicle. CCTV or dashcam footage may be vital so please check and send us anything which may assist.

“At this stage the incident is believed to have stemmed from some sort of disagreement between people in the street, so if you know anything please come forward.

“Knife crime can have catastrophic consequences in our communities and although the victim is recovering in hospital, this could have easily been a fatal stabbing. We are determined to establish exactly what happened and put those responsible before the courts.”
