The Greater Manchester Combined Authority has launched a new guide to help promote safety on nights out.

It comes in time for the new academic year as the region sees one of the highest student populations in Europe.

The authority has shared tips and listed places and services available in the city.

Advice includes ' Out together. Home together', 'Don’t be a creep' and 'Watch out for open water'.

The guide also promotes the use of black cabs or taxis booked through operators only and points out 'trusted people' such as the Village Angels in hot pink uniforms, Student Angels located along Oxford Road, taxi marshals in hi-vis vests and Transport for Greater Manchester Staff.

It also points out a number of places to visit if you are lost, in distress, need medical attention on a night out, including the Village Haven on Bloom Street, Manchester Central Community Fire Station and the Welfare Unit located in the Great Northern building.

Bev Hughes, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester for Policing, Crime, Criminal Justice and Fire, said: “Whilst we know the majority of people will have a great night out in Manchester, sadly we know things can and do go wrong.

"We hope our Good Night Out Guide will equip students and others on nights out in Manchester with knowledge on what to do and where to go for help should they ever need it.”

Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: "For thousands of students their arrival in Manchester will be a time of excitement and anticipation. We've a world-renowned nightlife in our city and we hope that as many students as possible get to enjoy it.

"However, things can and do go wrong on nights out which is why this guide is an important tool for our students to have. The Council is committed to keeping everyone in Manchester safe and will continue to work with our partners across the city to achieve this goal."
