The Conservatives have won the general election, leaving Jeremy Corbyn to announce he's planning to quit as Labour leader.

The Tories made huge gains in a string of former Labour strongholds in the north of England and the Midlands that backed Brexit in 2016.

The Conservatives secured their majority at around 5am when they crossed the threshold of 326 seats.

Jeremy Corbyn has described the night as very disappointing and revealed he will step down as leader.

Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to the SNP, which has become the dominant force in Scotland.

Here are some quotes from overnight:

It does look as though this One Nation Conservative government has been given a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done'' - Boris Johnson said.

"This is obviously a very disappointing night for the Labour Party with the result that we've got'' - Jeremy Corbyn.

"Let me say now, for millions of people in our country these results will bring dread and dismay and people are looking for hope'' - Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson who lost her Dumbartonshire East seat to the SNP

Here are some of the key local results:

  • Leigh has been won by the Conservatives for the first time in nearly 100 years
  • There have been Tory gains in Bury North, Bury South, Heywood&Middleton and Bolton North East

Other victories for the Conservatives came in Heywood and Middleton and Bury South.

Manchester Central candidate Lucy Powell tells us she's "gutted".

It was better news for Labour in Manchester overnight.

Labour were elected in Stockport where veteran former MP Ann Coffey resigned from the party after holding the seat since 1992 - Navendu Mishra is the area's new MP.

The Conservatives also gained Warrington South from Labour with Andy Carter winning the seat.

A Manchester count clashes with a Christmas party but it's not stopping a local works 'do!

Labour's Lucy Powell reacted to the night's results telling us - When we are losing places like Leigh and winning places like Putney on the same night, things have fundamentally shifted''.
