Free Parking in Manchester

Published 8th Jan 2016

Shoppers and visitors will be able to continue enjoying free on-street parking in parts of Manchester city centre during weekends throughout January following a very positive response to last weekend's deal.

The parking will be free in all on-street metered bays in zones three and four of the city centre – including streets near Piccadilly Station, in Castlefield and near Whitworth Street – from midday onwards during every weekend for the remainder of January.

The offer follows a positive response by shoppers to a scheme in which people were offered free parking across the city centre on January 2 and 3, and is part of a package of measures being introduced by Manchester City Council and its partners thanking motorists for bearing with them while major infrastructure works are carried out which will improve transport across the city.

These works are being introduced as part of the transformative Grow project which is seeing £1 billion invested in city centre infrastructure improvements by 2017, including the Metrolink second city crossing, bus priority measures, six new and better cycle routes into the city centre and major rail improvements.

The free parking will be available in zones three and four - which can be found by visiting www.manchester.gov.uk/citycentreparking - during the weekends of January 9-10, 16-17, 23-24, and 30-31.

Stickers will be attached on machines next to bays where parking will be free during these weekends.

NCP have also announced discounted parking throughout January in their off street car parks, and more details can be found at ****.

Further measures aimed at thanking people while they bear with the short term disruption caused by the introduction of these schemes are due to be announced over the next few weeks.

Cllr Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council’s executive member for the environment, said: “Manchester is benefiting from some of the greatest infrastructure investment the city has ever seen, and the work currently being undertaken will deliver transport improvements which will meet the needs of a rapidly growing city and keep us moving.

“However, we acknowledge these are major projects which will inevitably create some disruption in the short term, and we are also keen to support our retailers and visitors. Our initial weekend of free parking was a huge hit with shoppers and we’re keen to continue giving something back by offering free parking in selected parts of the city centre throughout the rest of January.”
