A large fire has torn through a former school building in Manchester, leaving behind a shell of what once was.

The derelict Camberwell Park School in Higher Blackley went up in flames at around 1am on Wednesday (2nd October), sending smoke pluming into the sky.

Eight fire engines and dozens of fire fighters were called to the site on Bank House Road, but station Manager John Hill told Hits Radio it was already too late to save it: "It's been fully lost unfortunately. By the time we got here it was already a well developed fire. It was already at a stage where we would have struggled to stop it."

"It's just a case of doing what we can, putting as much water on as possible and getting rid of the smoke plume for the surrounding residents and houses.

"The fire fighters have done a great job, they've worked really hard through the night. The school has been closed down for some time so there are no worries about any casualties.

"We're getting fire investigation teams onto the scene to look into the cause. The area will be cordoned off for quite a while."
