Investigation underway after suspicious chemicals found in Ashton
Police say two men have been arrested
An investigation's been launched by police after suspicious chemicals and firearms were found in a flat in Ashton-Under-Lyne.
Officers searched a flat in Mossley Road yesterday afternoon and found a number of suspicious items.
Nearby flats were evacuated as a precaution while an assessment of the chemicals was carried out and people were advised to avoid the area.
Greater Manchester's Fire and Rescue Service were called in to work out what the chemicals are.
A 37-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms and was taken to custody for questioning where he remains.
A second man, aged 43 was also arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms.
GMPs Chief Inspector Robert MacGregor, said: "Following the discovery of these chemicals this afternoon, we have been working with our colleagues from GMFRS while they carry out the appropriate assessments and this evacuation is purely a precaution.
"I would like to reassure the local community that we don’t believe there to be any wider threat to the public.
