Wigan Athletic's club doctor is speaking for the first time about helping save Charlie Wyke's life after the striker went into cardiac arrest during a training session.

Fortunately, club doctor Jonathan Tobin, alongside Latics coach Leam Richardson, sprang into action to give Charlie CPR.

The club's doctor has told Hits Radio that without their recent CPR training the outcome wouldn't "have been nearly as good".

"He wasn't breathing and he wasn't pumping blood around his body. I feared that if left untreated he would have died", said Johnathan Tobin.

"I was just fetching balls from the pitch when Charlie walked over to the gaffer and said 'I feel like I'm going to faint', and then just collapsed.

"The hardest thing on that pitch was deciding to start CPR. You freeze, it's hard. Thankfully we had some resuscitation training two weeks prior to that happening, and without that I don't think the outcome would have been nearly as good".

Jonathan, who also saved the life of former Bolton player Fabrice Muamba, wants all clubs to equip themselves with the same vital skills.

Speaking about other lower league teams, the Wigan doctor said: "The reality is they're not going to have a doctor on site, and if they have have got someone that can recognise an arrest and do CPR for the five minutes till the ambulance arrives, that will be truly lifesaving.

"I know that Fabrice rang Charlie yesterday and they had a conversation, and that really really hit me. I felt completely and utterly overwhelmed hearing that those two people had conversed and had a long chat. Fabrice offered to help Charlie in whatever way he could, and it completely overwhelmed me to think those two people are having that conversation.

Wigan Athletic's Charlie Wyke has thanked manager Leam Richardson and club doctor Jonathan Tobin for saving his life through a statement that was tweeted from the club's account.
