Train passengers have been left stranded after stormy weather damaged overhead wires at Manchester Piccadilly.

It's reported an overhead line 'exploded' later yesterday evening (Saturday, 9 December).

Storm Elin caused chaos on the rails in Manchester.

It's reported debris caused ‘explosions’ on overhead wires near to Piccadilly Station just before 6 o'clock.

That meant there were significant delays on the entire network.

Services in and out of Piccadilly were cancelled or severely disrupted - with Northern issuing 'do not travel' alert as a result.

It meant that some passengers were either stuck - with many being forced to get taxis home or get hotel rooms.

Northern Trains says 'train services running across the whole Northern network will be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes'.

It adds 'disruption is expected until 10am today (10 December)'.
