Police and fire service called to Unsworth after a blast involving a car

An investigation's underway after a vehicle was damaged in an explosion in Bury.

Police and fire crews were called to Harris Drive in Unsworth at about 11.50pm last night following reports of a loud bang.

Many residents in the area have taken to social media after hearing the blast.

A photo and dozens of comments have been posted on the Spotted Unsworth Facebook Page:

Superintendent Rick Jackson, of GMP’s Bury borough, said: “I understand that an incident like this will cause concern in the local area and I want to reassure the community that we have increased patrols in response. “Our investigation is at early stage and we are following a number of lines of enquiry, but we believe that this was a targeted attack that poses no threat to the wider community. “I would urge anybody who has information that can help our investigation to contact police.” Anybody with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 2687 of 04/09/16, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
