Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they were called to a street in Tameside at around 7:46pm after a member of the public recovered an item which was thought to be a wartime grenade.
It was found by 24-year-old Kieran Hurst who was magnet fishing with his friend on Sunday evening.
He originally took the grenade home thinking that it was inactive, but shortly after him and his partner called the police with concerns it could still be live.
It is believed to be one of the last items that was found while he was fishing.
Kieran says he placed the grenade, which is described as old and rusted, into a tub of water before handing it over to police officers.
GMP say there is no wider risk to the public.
