Ambulance crews attacked with fireworks whilst treating patient
It was one of THREE occasions when North West Ambulance paramedics came under attack on Bonfire Night.
North West Ambulance Service say last night the safety of their crews was put in jeopardy, when on three occasions, their stations and staff had fireworks thrown at them, including, while one crew were treating a patient on the street in Rochdale.
Fortunately no one was hurt, but the service say they are taking it "extremely seriously" and are condemning the behaviour.
Just after 7pm last night, Central Ambulance Station in Manchester was targeted with fireworks. Also half an hour later, Moreton Ambulance Station on the Wirral suffered a similar attack with fireworks also aimed at our crews stationed there.
However, even more worryingly, at least one firework was thrown at paramedics as they tended to an injured man on the road on St Albans Street in Rochdale at 8pm. Fortunately it missed, but struck the ambulance, landing nearby. Luckily it did not hamper our efforts to provide care to the patient.
'It could have resulted in serious injury or worse'
Head of Service for Greater Manchester, Dan Smith says “This is completely unacceptable behaviour; we are stunned that people feel they can behave in this way.
“While fortunately nobody was hurt and no damage was done during these incidents, it could have resulted in serious injury or worse. There is simply no excuse for this reckless and dangerous behaviour.”
“While the majority of people listen to our messages about enjoying Bonfire night responsibly, it is extremely disappointing to see that a small minority fail to take notice.
“We are working to support our staff affected also the police have been informed. If anyone has any information about those responsible we urge them to get in contact with them.”
