All Gorton and Denton by-election candidates announced
Voters will go to the polls later this month
The candidates standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election have been confirmed by authorities.
Voters in the Manchester and Tameside constituency will go to the polls on Thursday, February 26, 2026, following Andrew Gwynne’s resignation as the area’s MP on January 22. Nominations to stand in the by-election have now closed, and authorities have confirmed 11 candidates will stand in the poll.
They have also confirmed key deadlines for registering to vote. In order to cast a ballot, residents need to live within the Gorton and Denton constituency, be a British, Irish, or qualifying Commonwealth citizen aged 18 or over, and have registered to vote by 11:59pm on Tuesday, February 10.
The deadline for applying for a new postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday, February 11. The deadline to appoint a proxy vote to cast a ballot on someone’s behalf in the polling station is 5pm on Wednesday, February 18.
Like the 2024 general election, voters need to show a valid form of photo identification at the polling station in the Gorton and Denton by-election. The Electoral Commission has issued a full list of accepted IDs.
For those without an acceptable form of ID, a Voter Authority Certificate can be used instead. This needs to be applied for by 5pm on Wednesday, February 18, something that can be done online.
