It was only a matter of time before Sergio Agüero became City’s all-time goal-scorer – and on Tuesday night that moment became a reality.
In a thrilling 4-2 victory against Napoli, the Argentinian striker scored City’s third goal of the match. Assisting the team in securing a place in the last-16 of the Champions League, for the fifth consecutive year.
It was the 29-year-old’s 178th strike for the club, surpassing 1930s legend Eric Brook’s 78-year record. The goal came at a critical time for the team who were drawing with Napoli at 2-2 in the 69th minute.
Agüero has not only surpassed the records set by Brook’s and Tommy Johnson in recent seasons, but he’s also exceeded it in considerably fewer games too – scoring 178 goals in just 273 matches over the last six years.
Speaking after the match on Tuesday night Agüero said:
“I am enjoying this moment, I am very happy. This moment has been a long time coming.”
It seemed that Pep Guardiola was also in high spirits and happy with the team’s performance at the San Paolo stadium:
“When everything is going well it's easy. I am very pleased with the players, especially with the personality, and it was a great win for us.”
Tuesday night was certainly a memorable night for City, from qualifying for the knockout stages to extending their unbeaten run to 22 games. It looks like the team are showing no signs of stopping.
