'2016' time capsule buried in city centre
Manchester life captured in capsule and buried for 100 years.
A time capsule capturing a glimpse of life in Manchester as we know it in 2016 has been officially buried in St. Peter’s Square in the hope of giving future generations a piece of history.
Local school pupils helped create the tram and time themed design for the capsule. Its contents include a signed Coronation Street script from the week of the burial, as well as City and United memorabilia, along with images and footage of Manchester as it is today.
The event marked the end of a series of construction works across St. Peter’s Square and, with the date set to open the capsule being 2116, it will remain under the Square until future generations uncover it, whether on purpose or by accident.
Metrolink Director Peter Cushing said, “It’s great to freeze this moment in time for future generations at this pivotal point in time” with Councillor Rosa Battle echoing his thoughts saying, “I love the idea… It will be a timely reminder, when the capsule is prised open, of how much Manchester has changed.”
Councillor Fender said “…This time capsule really does capture a snapshot of the city” and quite poignantly, “We don’t know how future generations will be travelling, but I’m sure they’ll find all the items we’ve preserved in this historic Manchester Square fascinating.”
