A look back at some of the most memorable and often infamous Manchester City & Manchester United kits from the 1980s and 1990s – from the timeless to the eye-popping!

! 1. City's fluorescent yellow and black kit (1998-1999) Although it might not be the most aesthetically pleasing kit of all time, City’s fluorescent yellow and black shirt from the Gillingham play-off final in 1999 holds special memories for fans and perfectly encapsulated their “never say die” ethos on the day.

! 2. United's ‘invisible’ grey third kit (1995-1996) Recently voted the worst Manchester United kit of all time, the grey third kit went down in Manchester United folklore when Sir Alex Ferguson ordered his team to change out of it at half time when they were getting thumped 3-0 at Southampton (they eventually lost 3-1). He told the media his players couldn’t make each other out.

! 3. City's red & black away kit (1994-1996) City have had a series of memorable black and red away kits over the decades but few stand out quite as much as this one that spanned two seasons in the mid nineties thanks to the strange patches of bizarre netting material.

! 4. United's Adidas away kit (1990-1992) Who could possibly forget United’s blue away kit from the early nineties? As worn by Ryan Giggs in the 1992 League Cup final against Nottingham Forest, the kit featured a repetitive Adidas logo throughout the design. The following season, United switched to a new kit maker – Umbro.

! 5. City's Kappa home kit (1997-1999) In their two seasons of making City kits in the late nineties, Kappa created two designs that will forever be etched into fans’ memories – from the florescent away kit to their heavily logoed home shirt.

! 6. United's Newton Heath third shirt (1992-1994) Exactly a century on from Manchester United’s first appearance in the first division – when they were known as Newton Heath – the club adopted the team colours of late 1800s for their third kit. Fans once again adopted the green and yellow colours in the 2000s as a protest against the Glazers.

! 7. City's maroon and white away kit (1996-1997) Just a year after their netted red and black away kit, City unleashed another highly striking away shirt for their season in the first division. Although they had didn’t have the greatest time on the pitch, City’s late nineties kits have acquired something of a cult status.

! 8. United's Old Trafford home shirt (1994-1996) The home kit from the 1994 to 1996 season featured Old Trafford emblazoned within the kit. Boosting the shirt’s popularity, it’s synonymous with one of the most successful periods in their illustrious history.

! 9. City’s shiny home kit (1981-1982) As sported by Britain’s first million pound player, Trevor Francis, the early eighties kit was extremely figure hugging (leaving very little to the imagination) and turned two-tone when sunlight shimmered across its surface. Truly unforgettable.

! 10. United's Adidas home kit (1982-1983) Few Manchester United kits are as beautifully simplistic and timeless as their 1982 home shirt. Sported by the legend that is Bryan Robson, here it is devoid of the usual Sharp sponsorship.

! 11. City's pinstripe away kits (1992-1995) Harking back to the SAAB pinstripe white away kit from the early 1980s, City revived the design not once but twice in the nineties. Definitely a strong look!

! 12. United's goalkeeper kit (1994-1995) There are countless memorable United goalie kits during Peter Schmeichel talisman-like era, but few stand out quite like this gloriously garish shirt and short combo from the mid-nineties. The kind of kit only a true fan could love.

! 13. City's Umbro Home kit (1989-1991) Modelled here by the mighty Niall Quinn, City’s sky blue home kit at the turn of the eighties and nineties is timeless. It also formed the blueprint for the next three incarnations of the City home kit.

! 14. United's Champions League/treble winning shirt (1998-1999) Few shirts evoke quite as many special memories as United’s kit during their treble-winning season of 1998 to 1999. Here’s Champions League winning goal scorer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flanked by Dwight Yorke and Ronny Johnsen.
