Woman dies in Walthamstow house fire

A woman has died following a house fire in Walthamstow early this morning.

The London Fire Brigade were called to a semi-detached house in Higham Hill Road at around 5.20am on Wednesday (28 December).

Firefighters rescued the woman from the ground floor of the building, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Most of the ground floor and part of the first floor were damaged in the blaze, which was under control shortly after 7am.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Walthamstow, Tottenham and Leyton fire stations attended.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
