Targeted testing is underway in South Bermondsey after the Covid 19 variant first identified in South Africa was found there.

We understand it's a different and unrelated case to the one recently found in the Faraday Ward.

Southwark Council are delivering letters to about 2,000 homes and is asking residents in the wider area to consider taking a test.

Councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: “There is no cause for alarm.

“We are writing to residents in a defined area as a precaution because this variant of Covid-19 may be more easily passed between people.

“It is important residents in the area have a test if they have Covid-19 symptoms.

“It is also important they continue to follow the current rules on social distancing and meeting with people from outside their household.”

Residents who are concerned or have any questions can email publichealth@southwark.gov.uk.
