A plaque to honour a university student killed in a crash in central London has been unveiled.

Second year physics student 20 year old Aalia Mahomed died after a van crashed in a pedestrianised area of The Strand. Three others were also injured.

As well as the plaque, Aalia’s family were presented with a posthumous degree certificate at a graduation ceremony hosted at King's College University

Speaking after the unveiling, Aalia’s brother Zain said

‘My sister was amazing. She was really smart, loving, funny - I would never say it to her but funny.

‘If I am being completely honest I wish I could say something nice about the ceremony today. I wish I could say I was happy to be here but it was painful. She should have been the one up there getting the award. She worked harder for that award than anyone else I know.

‘I am just happy me and my mum could be there today to accept it on her behalf’.

Joseph Knight was sat on the bench next to Aalia when she was injured in March.

"She was so caring, so loving, so interested, so bright , so modest, so bright, she would light up a room with her smile.

She is a person who was so special and I'm so convinced that she would have done amazing things for humanity and she can't be forgotten. If the plaque stands as something that reminds students here or teaches students here about who she was and what happened here then that is vitally important."

A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and drug driving. He's been bailed as investigations continue.
