A Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with assault after a man suffered serious injuries after being tasered.

PC Liam Newman from the East Area Command Unit was charged after an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The charges relate to an April 2022 incident when a man in his 60's fell from a garaged after being tasered by the officer in Chigwell Road, Woodford.

The man sustained life-changing injuries.

In a statement, Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell said “I am acutely aware of the level of public concern following this incident.

"Our officers understand it is vitally important to maintain public trust and confidence, and that such matters are thoroughly investigated.

"Given criminal proceedings are now active we must now allow the circumstances to be examined in open court.”

After the incident, the Met referred it to the IOPC for an independent investigation. The case was then passed to the Crown Prosecution Service in May 2023.

PC Newman is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on the 20th of November.
