Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters tackled a fire on Electric Lane near Brixton Market.

A three-storey warehouse was alight.

London Fire Brigade's 999 control officers took 53 calls about the fire.

The news editor at the South London Press James Twomey said he'd been told the fire was "in an area where items are stored for the market and people might still be there." In the end, no injuries were reported.

The Brigade was called at 2058 and the fire was under control by 0030. Fire crews from Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

Footage on social media showed large clouds of smoke covering the Brixton area.

'Shocking'

Local MP Helen Hayes called the scenes "shocking".

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
