Royal Parks warn cyclists to slow down
It's after a recent poll by The Royal Park Charity found 86% of Londoners think there should be a 20mph speed limit for bicycles.
The Royal Parks charity, who help run London parks like Hyde Park and Green Park have launched a new campaign encouraging cyclists to be more considerate in an effort to boost safety.
The 'considerate cycling' campaign was launched after several cases of people being injured following collisions including bicycles.
A recent survey by the charity found 72% of pedestrians had witnessed or experienced a near miss or collision with a cyclist.
86% of those asked also said they believe cyclists should follow the 20mph speed vehicle limit in Central London, which they are currently exempt from.
Director of parks Darren Share told us the new campaign wasnt there to punish cyclists, but to make the parks safer for all who use them.
"Because the parks are very busy, we need to make sure the pedestrians, as well as the cyclists are completely safe.
"We looked at what we can do, and speed is one of those areas where, if we can reduce speed, we know there will be less accidents.
"We've had incidents where cyclists have come off and caused injury to themselves, or driven into cars or trees.
"If we can reduce speed, then it is safer for the pedestrians, the park users, and the cyclists themselves".
The new code of conduct from The Royal Parks hopes to show the best practice for cycling in the parks.
The code of conduct includes:
Respect the park environment
Respect all park visitors
Control their speed
Know the rules - comply with the Highway Code and Park Regulations
Be seen and be heard
