Fire service safety warning over flammable Christmas decorations
Fire chiefs say candles are still one of the top causes of house fires across Greater Manchester
The fire service across Greater Manchester are warning people to make sure they know the extra dangers posed during the festive season.
Candles and electrical sockets are among the things fire chiefs say can pose the most dangers in our homes during the holidays.
Candels are still in the top five causes of house fires across the region.
Steve Jordan, a group manager at Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, has this advice:
"We want to ensure that everybody has a happy and festive time.
"Often there are decorations and candles that are used so in terms of candle safety, it's really important to make sure you never leave them unattended. Never leave them near any fabrics, or curtains, make sure they're on a firm base so they don't fall over and out of reach of children.
"Electrical safety is also important as well. Make sure when you leave the room you turn everything off. We know that with Christmas tree lights, there will be a bigger requirement for electrical sockets so make sure you don't overload sockets.
"Make sure you don't daisy chain where you have extension leads around the house. One extension lead is the safe form of practice.
"Also, make sure you don't leave electrical lights on paper or materials that could cause a potential ignition, especially near Christmas trees and presents.
