People have been allowed to return to their homes in part of Salford after a controlled explosion was carried out.

A suspicious item was found during an 'isolated and contained' search operation in the Kersal Moor area yesterday.

Police say it's not yet been confirmed what the item was, but an assessment deemed the device to be 'viable'.

A number of other items – including firearms – were also recovered and have been taken away for forensic examination.

A number of homes had to be evacuated whilst the operation was carried out, but all residents who were told to leave have now been allowed to return.

The cordon in the area has now also been scaled down.
