Two sets of dogwalkers have been rescued from an island on the Wirral after becoming trapped during Storm Ashley.

The four people and three dogs were in ankle deep water when lifeboat crews reached them on Hilbre Island in the River Dee on Sunday (20 October)

It came less than 48 hours after the RNLI had to rescue 10 people and another dog from the island on Saturday (19 October).

Lifeboat crews are now putting out a fresh warning about high tides around the West Kirkby area.

Andy Brown, West Kirby RNLI Launch Authority, said: "With high tides like those we’ve seen over the weekend, we’d recommend making your way back to shore from Little Eye no later than three hours before high tide.

"We’d also urge people to stick to the sand and not the rocks, as they can be exceptionally slippery and cause injury.

'The strong winds are expected to continue tomorrow, so we advise taking extra precautions if you’re near the coast."
