Detective Inspector Debbie Tipton said: "This will have been a frightening incident for the victim and for any witnesses, and he is being treated in hospital. It is through luck alone that this assault wasn’t even more serious.

“The use of knives and other weapons on the streets can have catastrophic consequences for all of those involved, and we're sure that people hold information about tonight's incident.

“Our work at the scene continues and I'd urge anyone who saw what happened, or may have captured youths making off around the time of the assault, to please come forward. If you live on Rice Lane or surrounding streets, please check any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell devices so we can establish the circumstances.

“Violent crime devastates communities and we are determined to continue the decreases in knife crime we have seen recently across Merseyside. Vital to this is information from those affected, so speak to us and we will do the rest.”
