Merseyside charity hosts female only club night as figures reveal 80% don't feel safe in bars
Research by Tomorrow's Women has found the vast majority of the women supported by the charity have experienced harassment on a night out.
A charity on The Wirral has revealed more than 80% of the women they support don't feel safe in bars and clubs, prompting the creation of a female only club night aimed at tackling violence against women and girls.
Tomorrow's Women, with bases in Birkenhead and Chester, also found 93% of women in their care feel vulnerable in general if they're out at night on their own, with 91% in support of more women only events on The Wirral.
Emma Kennedy is an empowerment advisor with the charity: "Women are telling us they don't feel safe at night, they feel like they're having to look over their shoulder at all times. They're always planning that something might happen, always having one eye in the back of their head. I think, as women, we've all had experiences on nights out where we could say that's been the case for either us, a friend or family member."
Emma will perform a DJ set at the event next month, which will showcase 90s/2000s dance music: "We've also got two other DJ's involved from the Queensway Collective and it will be a really great night. There will be support on offer as the event is going on, we've got a number of services that will be there to give information about being safe at night if anyone has any worries or queries."
Kate Chadwick is the charity's communications lead and says this event is in direct response to what the service deals with on a daily basis: "Whether it's just walking home or getting public transport; women tell us they don't feel safe. There are so many women who don't feel safe going to clubs - they might have had experiences that have been negative, from harassment, spiking or sexual assault in nightclubs and bars which has completely put them off from going out."
With the support of Merseyside's Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell, the 18+ women-only event, will be held at Future Yard in Birkenhead on 3rd December 2024 from 6pm-10pm.
