It followed a day of heavy rain, which triggered warnings from both the Environment Agency and the Met Office.

Dave lives on Bowles Street and said: "It comes up really quickly, and contaminates everything. This is the second time it's happened, it happened a few years ago."

"This isn't as bad, but it's still not good enough."

Liz, who lives a few doors down, described a foul smell in the house, and said she would have to replace her carpets and curtains.

"I've got asthma and it affects my breathing, I don't know whether I'll have to move out at the moment. It's a bit upsetting."

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said it evacuated around 40 homes on Monday night, and some people were taken to an evacuation centre.

Both the Met Office and the Environment Agency issued warnings, although rain is expecting to clear over the next few days.
