Students in Lincoln missing out because of increasing costs
Rent prices are one aspect that are said to have been continuously going up year on year
The costs of everyday living for a student in Lincoln is said to have continuously risen over the last few years - with some now missing out on socialising as a result
The City's University Student Union says that because of rent prices alone - some students have no choice but to live at home others can't afford to go out
Amelia Hinton - is an officer for the union and tells us many are coming to her for financial support:
"I think there's obviously a big increase in costs at the moment, particularly the cost of living crisis. I think it's a much more expensive time to be a student than in previous years. I think it's just rising year on year. So yeah, students are really feeling it and I think they're having to cut costs where they haven't had to previously.
"I think students are definitely having to look at what they're spending their money on, like prioritising things like rent, you know, electricity, food, bills, that sort of thing rather than going out, and I think that's evident in town with it being quieter. So I think they're really having to make those hard choices now."
Amelia added that many have spoken to her about the fact they're unable to afford to socialise anymore:
"I think in general, I've just had students who's chatting to me, you know, about not being able to go out and having to think about the cost of maybe joining a society or a sport and actually weighing that up with, you know, can they afford that against their food bill?
"I think costs in general are rising, and rent is one that just isn't stopping. So I think there probably needs to be a bit more of a look at if it can it be capped, because I think it's got to point where students are weighing up whether they can actually afford to live at the University, so they're not always able to live away from home."
The University of Lincoln Students Union offer care packages to those who are struggling with their finances, and also have access to a food bank for those students in need. Further, the university also offers extra finance support.
