With the cold snap continuing a South Lincolnshire charity says more pensioners could end up in poverty at the end of their life following the removal of the winter fuel payment for some.

The proportion of people dying in poverty has risen by almost a fifth in recent years.

More than a hundred and 11 thousand people are estimated to have died in poverty last year.

We've been speaking to Simon Jary, debt centre manager for Christians Against Poverty in South Lincolnshire about the issue - he believes more people are struggling.

He told us: "Certainly the cost of living crisis over the last 2 or 3 years has been a big factor to that."

"The Government's decision to look at winter payments as well - it's looked at on the basis of what you can afford etc but that is having an impact on people as well who were just about managing but are now struggling."

To add to the stress and strain of being in end of life can impact that massively

"Of the clients I have seen struggling with serious illness - maybe end of life care - being able to alleviate them and help them with their debt is a massive thing."

"We don't see the effects on people definitely."

"We need to see compassion and help from the Government as much as we can see and I think anything they can do to make a difference and make it more manageable for people has got to be welcomed."

"End of live is obviously a very difficult time for people - people who are living in poverty - people who are victims of the cost of living crisis or on a very small pension it can be difficult."

"To add to the stress and strain of being in end of life can impact that massively."

The Government says they have put in place extra support for those who need it most - with things like the extension of the household support fund.
